If you are looking to live a nomadic lifestyle and stay in countries for any extended period of time, then you will have to figure out a solution for data on your mobile device. Some noobs might think, I can just use the international plan provided to me by my provider back at home, such as T-Mobile or Verizon. But these "international plans" are very expensive and not sustainable long term. You'll need to find a real and affordable solution.
How nomads used to do this back in the day was just buy a local SIM card at the airport when you land in a country. That is what I used to do when I started traveling back in 2016. And this solution is fine, it does the job. And is usually very affordable. It's also a nice benefit because you get a local number with talk and text which gives you the ability to utilize local services that require a local phone number, such as order food from a local delivery app.
Google Fi - the OG international data plan
In 2017, I discovered Google Fi, which was an amazing solution for Americans. Google Fi had plans that gave you international data in over 180 countries. The data would be activated right when you landed and ready to use. It was extremely convenient and by the far the best solution for international data at the time (for Americans).
However, apparently Google Fi did not intend for their international data plans to be used extensively and full time by digital nomads. These international plans were meant for temporary use abroad. By the time Google Fi realized how digital nomads were leveraging their international data plans, it had been a couple of years. I think I got away using Fi abroad till 2018 or 2019. But then I received the dreaded email from their support team notifying me that they were going to cancel my international data. And I would have to return back to the States and use my data their for a considerable amount of time before they would turn on my international data.
This was super annoying, because at the time, there were no good alternatives. So it was back to using local SIM cards in each country. Not the end of the world, but still annoying.
International Data Plans in 2024
Fast forward to today, and the options for international data have significantly improved. With the rise of digital nomadism and the growing need for reliable internet access in every corner of the globe, new technologies like eSIMs have emerged as game-changers.
